Rewriting My Story: God Is Not Finished With Me Yet

Each month a member of the Edify Team from around the globe will be reflecting on how God transforms our lives when we choose to follow Him. This month, Nyanda Biaty Duworko, Liberia’s Christian Transformation and Training Officer, discusses how God is currently rewriting her own story and the stories of the people around her.

As a small girl growing up in Liberia during the civil war, I really did not understand that God had a plan for my life, but I believe now that He does. God’s plan can only be fulfilled if we give time to listen to Him and let Him transform us. I felt God’s call to reach the youth of my country, but I didn’t know what to do about it, so I went to school to prepare myself for a future I did not know or understand. For years God has been preparing me for where I am today.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

God has been preparing me for service by providing opportunities for me to work in different capacities in my country as a peer educator, youth counselor and girl’s resource center supervisor. Though the jobs were good, there were also difficulties and challenges. Through the challenges, the Lord assured me that He was preparing me for the transformation of Liberia.  The civil war had broken down all fabrics of society, especially in morality and integrity. For me to stand up for true integrity and good morals meant I would be an outcast in my community. God was working on me for His greater purpose.

In Isaiah 40:31 the Bible says” But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”  I was feeling weary and faint from the challenges I faced at my previous job, when I received a call from one of my former employers telling me about a position with Edify.  In May of 2014 my employer told me that she would not renew my contract in June. Thankfully, I got the job with Edify as a Christian Transformation and Training Officer in Liberia and began my work in June. I knew then that God’s promises are always true and he was not finished with me yet, for he is still working on transforming me for a greater purpose.

Being a part of the Edify family has been uplifting and encouraging. I was welcomed into Edify with love and acceptance from people I did not know. Every morning I wake up with a renewed commitment and dedication, knowing that this is not just a job but a call from God to transform Liberia. God is using me as a work in progress to draw people around me to Him every day. I see this in my family, my colleagues, the proprietors, teachers, students, parents and everybody I come in contact with daily. I can boldly say that “I am confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in me will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
